Get's Vaccines: New Hope People with Breast Cancer

Experts from the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences starts clinical trial of a vaccine to prevent recurrence of breast cancer.
According to Laura Hutchins, director of hematology and oncology, who was also the leader of the research, if successful, this vaccine is not to traditional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy to replace, but are used as additional treatment for patients.
Thomas Kieber-Emmons has been developed, director of basic research of breast cancer in the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, said the vaccine under study, more than a decade studying the immune system. He said the most important key is to understand how the different molecules together to eradicate the disease.
cells of breast cancer is known by molecules such as antigens, which focused on the production of antibodies that breast cancer cells can trigger the fight works. However, do not stimulate carbohydrate antigens on cancer cells, a strong immune response.
Kieber-Emmons and his team have found another approach. They developed a peptide antigen (peptide-antigen) which is similar to the carbohydrate.
This peptide is a compound of two or more amino acids. basic peptide vaccines with this thing the body produces antibodies with a target peptide in vaccines and carbohydrates, they produce copies in the cells of breast cancer.
The experiments were conducted in several stages. The first step for a period of 4-6 months, and women involved in malignant breast cancer and women with cancer that has returned to the reduction of symptoms experienced. These women received 5 doses of vaccine.
Phase 2 instead of 1 year and women who participated in breast cancer and no symptoms, but for breast cancer in high risk returned. This woman has stopped chemotherapy for at least 6 months. The number of patients included in this study has not been determined.
Breast cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanic women and the No. 2 cause of death among white women, black and Asian women and American Indians. In 2004 40.954 women died of breast cancer.
